In can be confusing knowing which letters to capitalise when writing Blogs, Articles, Press Releases, Web Pages, Newsletters, Brochures, Adverts etc. So which words should be capitalised in a title?
You should “Capitalize the most important words”. Below is the “official” list of which words are NOT capitalized. If it is not on this list, capitalize the word.
When writing titles you are supposed to capitalize the letters but not all of them. It is somewhat confusing knowing what to capitalise and what not to. To make it even more difficult to workout different people will capitalise the words in title differently.
If you want to a rule to apply then this is what you need to do.
The Title Capitalisation Rule
You need to capitalise the most important words. Below there is a list of words that should not be capitalised subject to the four exceptions below. If you have a word that you are not sure about the rule is: if it is not on the list below then it should be capitalised.
The 4 exceptions to the rule of words not to capitalise:-
1) When one of the words below starts a title
2) When one of the words below ends a title
3) When one of the words below follows a colon, such as in a subtitle.
4) When one of the words below in a quotation which is part of the title then follow the capitalisation that is used in the quote.
The words that should not be capitalised in a title subject to the exceptions above are in the table below:-
